We are delighted to introduce Matthew Cann as our new Musical Director. Matthew started in September 2019 and is already challenging us with a beautiful programme of French music featuring Duruflé’s haunting setting of the requiem mass.
Matthew is extremely experienced in the world of church music, having started as a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral. He has been singing and playing every since, studying piano and voice in Colchester where he gained a first in piano performance. He now sings as a Lay Vicar in Exeter Cathedral Choir as well as performing as a bass soloist throughout the region.
His teaching pedigree is equally impressive. Matthew gained a post-graduate diploma from Oxford and is currently a teacher at the prestigious Exeter School. When he is not singing and teaching, he conducts his own choir, “Antiphon”, which was founded in 2011 and has recorded two discs with Willowhayne Records. He is also a composer and has had an anthem broadcast on Radio 3.
This background, including numerous television appearances, radio broadcasts, tours and recordings attracted us to Matthew initially. However, it was his personal warmth and exacting approach to conducting that won us over. We are delighted that he has joined us this term and we can’t wait to see and hear how the choir develops under his baton.
